A foreign VPN won't help in China these days. About a year ago, the arguably best one, Express VPN, was blocked, in Shanghai at least. I know, I've tried it in vain.
AFAIK, the only type of VPN that will give you Gmail and Google stuff etc. is a special domestic Chinese VPN granted to companies that have to access certain banned Western web apps and websites. They're hard to come by – you have to know somebody who has been issued with a VPN like that and who would be willing to help you with his/her own copy. Not likely, though – I suspect they're registered to a particular machine and/or user.
