Thanks, this happened to me when loading a template.It ended up being a simple issue... which I would have never worked out without help (Thanks to Bitwig Technical Support Team!)
The Solution
To switch the "auto-record" off, I had to deselect the punch-in and all was well once again.
The issue
The Punch In button was pressed and the loop markers were set to the length of the track.

Bitwig starts recording automatically (regardless of whether you want to record or not it seems) when the punch-in button is pressed.
When I was pressing play, the play position went straight into the punch-in area, that being 1.1.1/start of the loop, and automatically armed the recording button.
Ableton Live, Reaper and Studio One's functionality differs slightly - you have to select record to cause punch-in/out recording to happen. Pressing play in those DAWs does not automatically record - you have to explicitly press record in the transport bar to enable the punch in.
