Yeah, I know there are workarounds such as making symlinks to this or that shared library to fool the installer. You should be able to make them run anywhere, so long as they are written
for linux, thats one if the good things
about linux.
If you want a nice rpm package or something,
thats the only reason to use a targeted distro.
Dependancies these days are nothing, we used to have to build stuff from source, practically everytime.
As for me, I have compiled a kernel from source two or three times a long time ago (I started with Linux circa RedHat 4.2). There are times when I consider putting GKrellM back on my desktop for nostalgia's sake.
What I slightly might consider resenting is commercial developers who first impose some major restrictions on the Venn Diagram of distro-choice [which might feel like the tightening of a snare for some] just so that customers can install their software easily, and it still turns out that the vendors have not kept up with developments and trends regarding shared libraries and other dependencies even within that subset of distros -- leaving some research and workarounds to their paying customers just to get the app working.
Hmm. "Where should I send the invoice?"
