Before you spend any money I would give this a try

https://neovst.com/piano-one/

Piano One is a really good and free piano plugin that is a blend of samples and modeling. It's part of a much larger paid suite but Sound Magic gives away the piano for free as a sample

Definitely worth a look for free
No offense but I couldn't disagree more. I've tried various free piano VIs and that was one of the worst. It looks really slick, but the sound? Pass. However you bring up a good point that the OP should try some freebies before spending any money. IMO the free version of Hammersmith, Memoir Piano, and Ivy 162 are some of the best free ones.

This all assumes you're looking for a grand piano, of course. If you want an upright, Sampletekk's Rain Piano is the best I've heard and it's fairly inexpensive...and if you get one of their steep discount sales (they have them off and on), practically free. They also have many grand pianos, but I can't speak to how good they are.
